Classmate PC Project at Clemton Park PS, 2008

· RATIONALE
Students in 2008 will benefit from having ready access to computer technology throughout every school day and at home over a period of 3 school terms, by having the individual use of a classmate pc device in their classroom. Pre and post project assessment data will show improved skills across all Key Learning Areas. Evidence will also indicate increased levels of student engagement in school activities and enhanced social skills.

· VISION
To assess the influence of several key factors including:

Factor

Need
Increase student engagement with learning; bridge the digital & academic divide; increase school attendance
Readiness
Teachers ready to integrate innovative approaches into teaching practice
Content
Interactive multimedia content; customised skoool science & maths content; local school content
Connectivity
Wireless throughout school & home & community
New learning models

Collaborative; connected; communicative; anywhere - anytime
Broadband
High-speed throughout school (& eventually, home)
Personalised learning

Programs developed in collaboration with students and parents. Meet State Plan & regional targets
Access

Beyond the classroom walls; outdoors; at home; the immediate community; anywhere - anytime

· University – Deakin (evaluation)

· SCHOOL CONTEXT
28 students in a year 4 class (4D) at Clemton Park PS will be the trial project class. Another year 4 class (4M) will provide control data at all phases of the project. Specific factors that will need to be taken into account at Clemton Park PS are: the high percentage of our students from non English speaking backgrounds (NESB); the cultural diversity of the school, the wide gap in academic ability by students in both the trial class and the control class and the varied access and support of compute usage at home.

· TIMELINE
Term One: Permissions for participation in the trial will be sought; the technology for using the classmate pc devices will be installed at the school; an information session will be held for Year 4 parents; baseline data will be collected about student computer skills using an adapted form of the Computer skills assessment (year 6); students will have been given a opportunity to use the PC devices in an informal way in the classroom.
Terms Two & Three: Class programs of both classes will indicate evidence of how technology is being integrated into classroom practice through detailed units of work produced for the INTEL: Thinking Tools course. Formative and summative assessment data will be an inclusive part of all work taught. In the case of 4D, the class program will show at what times of each school day the pc devices are being utilised.
Term Four:
The devices will be utilised in the same way as in the previous terms up to week 6 of term 4. At this point, summative post project data will be collected and the pc devices will be utilised more informally in the classroom context.

· IMPLEMENTATION AT SCHOOL
Throughout each schooldays in terms two and three and for the first six weeks of term four in the classroom and school grounds with the class teacher, as well as in team teaching situations with the computer coordinator.

· IMPLEMENTATION AT HOME
Specific homework tasks and follow up form class activities will be given to the students. They will also be able to use them in a more informal way at home with prescribed parental supervision, in relation to internet access etc.

· ASSESSMENT
Prescribed qualitative assessment data will be collected by researchers from Deakin University. School data will be collected as described above, in terms of baseline data from the Computer skills assessment (CSA), as well as individual student data about litearcy and numeracy ability, attendance rates and frequency of detentions. On going school formative and summative assessment will be documented explicitly in the class program, as per the requirements of the INTEL-Thinking Tools course.

· OVERALL EVALUATION
This will be carried out with all partners in term 4.
